How To Find Joy In Your Life

When I was a little girl, we sang a song in Sunday school that went like this:

“J” is for Jesus

“O” is for others

“Y” is for you

Put yourself last and spell joy.

In today’s world, we are all about finding things that make us happy:  more stuff – clothes, jewelry, houses, cars, trinkets, electronics, and money.  You name it and we think we want it and more of it.  However, it seems that as soon as we get that “something we just had to have” the feel-good feeling is gone, and we soon want something else.  What can we do to really be happy – to have real lasting Joy?

I think the secret, like the little song says, is putting things in our lives in the right order.

Put  Jesus first.  The Bible tells us in Mathew 6:33 to seek first His kingdom and  His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  How can you put Jesus first?  Honor Him with your prayers, praise and thanksgiving.  Praise Him for all he has given you and done for you.  John 3: 16 tells us “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Put others next.  Romans 12:10 says to be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.  How can you put others next?  Pray for them, encourage them and help them.

Put yourself last. Romans 12:3 says … Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

Now this doesn’t mean that we are to be lowly doormats.  Far from it!  It just means that we should put Jesus and the things that would please Him first in our lives.  We should magnify and exalt Him. We should love one another as ourselves.  If you are loving someone else as you love yourself, it makes sense that you should do things that are loving for yourself.  Eat right and take care of yourself.  Take time for yourself to take care of you – relax, recharge, and enjoy the life God has given you!

Do some reorganizing.  Put Jesus first in your life and you will find lasting joy!
