How to Pray for Our Leaders

It is important to know how to pray for our leaders.  This week the pastor of our church brought a wonderful sermon from 1st Timothy 2: 1-8 (NIV)

1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

This passage teaches that we are to pray for our leaders – all those in authority.  Can my prayers help?  Yes, the Bible tells us in James 5:16 (NIV) that… the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.  How often should I pray? 1st Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV) says to pray without ceasing.

Take a moment to STOP and consider your prayers.

SStop.  Be deliberate in assessing your prayers.  What do you pray about?

TTake Inventory.  How much have you prayed this week? Today?

OOpen Your Heart.  Focus your prayers on specifics, not just generalizations. Pray always with thanksgiving.

PPray.  Make it a habit to pray all during your day.  Set aside specific tasks as times that you will also pray.  For example, pray at every red light or pray while cooking or folding the laundry or unloading the dishwasher.  You don’t have to close your eyes or open your mouth.  God hears the prayers of our heart and mind.

I hope that you will consider making prayer with thanksgiving a regular part of your routine and to pray for our leaders.  While it may seem to be such a small thing for us to do, our God is a Mighty God and hears our prayers!
