Black Eyed Peas in the Instant Pot

Enjoy dried black eyed peas prepared using an Instant Pot pressure cooker.  It is extremely easy, healthy, inexpensive and tastes delicious!

Black Eyed Peas in the Instant Pot

Prepare dried black eyed peas in your Instant Pot to achieve peas that are cooked perfectly every time.  Before I bought an instant pot pressure cooker, it was hit or miss for me on how my dried peas would turn out.  Sometimes they were perfect, but sometimes they were a little crunchy or hard.  We like our peas to be a soft melt-in-your-mouth texture.  Let me warn you – once you try cooking in the Instant Pot you won’t want to go back to your old cooking methods. If I used my instant pot for preparing dried peas and beans only it would be worth every penny I paid for it.  See recipe below and try it out for yourself to see how easy and delicious it is!

How to Make Black Eyed Peas Using Your Instant Pot

Begin the night before by sorting and rinsing 2 cups of dried black eyed peas.  By sorting I mean pour out the beans in your hand and look for bad ones to toss out.  Put them in a bowl to soak overnight.  Rinse and drain before cooking.  Next, place the beans in the silver pot of your instant pot and cover with 5 cups of water and a tablespoon of salt.  Add a tablespoon of olive oil and give it a stir.  Note:  The olive oil is necessary to keep the peas from frothing up in your instant pot.  Place lid (with seal in place) on top.  Set valve on top to sealing position.  Press the “beans” button or set to manual for 35 minutes.  That’s it.

First it takes about 10 minutes for the pressure to build and begin cooking and then it cooks under pressure for 35 minutes.  Next it will beep when the time is up.  Afterwards let the pressure release naturally (just let it sit there) for 15 minutes, then release any remaining pressure by using a large slotted spoon to nudge the valve to the vent position.  After 15 minutes there is not much pressure left.  Take the top off, remove the silver pot, taste and add more salt or pepper if you wish and serve.  Enjoy!
